Project title: INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR BLOOD RECYCLING
Company name : ERYTHROSAVE
TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD
Medical Device, Pediatric
Hematology
KEY WORDS
Premature Infants,
Anemia, Blood Recycling
PROJECT SUMMARY
Innovative device and method for immediate return of red blood
cells taken for laboratory testing from premature babies or
infants in intensive care.
Many blood samples for laboratory testing are required from
premature babies with birth weight of 1.5 kg. (3 lb, 5 oz.) and
less (before 32nd week) and infants in intensive care. The
quantity of blood taken is sufficient to bring about anemia. In
order to return blood that was taken, according to standard
criteria, three units of blood are returned to the infant.
Today, as a rule, thirty blood samples are taken in the first
week of the life of the premature infant and three transfusions
of blood from the Blood Bank replace the blood taken.
The goal of the project is to develop a system and devices that
will enable separation of red blood cells from plasma in order to
return them immediately to the infant and at the same time send
the plasma for laboratory testing. This will enable reduction of
50% of the blood transfusions required today.
ADVANTAGES
This result in a very significant reduction of risk involved in
giving a donor blood transfusion and a net financial saving
estimated at US $160.00 per premature infant.
