Project title: ELECTRO UTERINE MONITOR FOR DETERMINATION OF ONSET OF LABOR

Company name : OB-TOOLS

TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD
Medical Diagnostics

KEY WORDS
Prenatal Care, Premature
Delivery

PROJECT SUMMARY
Premature birth, defined as delivery between 24 weeks and 37
weeks of gestation, is a major health problem throughout the
world. Traditional obstetric intervention has not been highly
successful in the prevention of pre-term labor and premature
delivery. This is mainly due to the fact that current diagnostic
equipment is unable to differentiate between non-specific uterine
activity and contractions that actually lead to labor.
Pre-term labor often results in costly hospital admissions and
the use of medication to inhibit labor. In addition, a
distressing number of premature babies suffer from low birth
weight and face lifelong medical complications and even death.
The substantial economic impact of pre-term labor and birth is
borne by the families, the hospitals and society as a whole.

The company's first product, EUM-100, is a patent-pending
diagnostic monitor that can identify specific contractions and
accurately determine the start of labor. The EUM-100, which is
based on electromyographic (EMG) technology, takes objective
measurements of uterine electrical signals. Electrodes are placed
on the external surface of the abdomen and the monitor displays
uterine electric waves, similar to the EKG equipment used to
monitor heart functionality. The process is completely
non-invasive and provides the opportunity for immediate
assessment by a healthcare professional.
