Project title: BACKLIGHT UNIT FOR LARGE FORMAT LCD-TV
Company name : OMS DISPLAYS LTD.
TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD
Large Format LCD-TV, Back Light
Unit for LCD-TV
KEY WORDS
Large format LCD-TV,
BLU - Back Light Unit, LCD - Liquid Crystal Display
PROJECT SUMMARY
OMS Displays (OMS) develops a unique Backlight Unit (BLU) for
Liquid Crystal Display TVs (LCD-TV) based on a proprietary
architecture and utilizing the company expertise in integrated
optics and polymer waveguides. This unique solution will enable a
significant reduction in the LCD-TV cost and will create displays
that are brighter, thinner, express richer colours, and save
power.
Current LCD-TV technology utilizes a BLU based on white light
illumination and separation of colours by expensive colour
filters (CF). The patented OMS BLU architecture will enable the
utilization of Red, Green and Blue (RGB) light sources by wave
guiding the light via optical polymer sheets directly to their
sub-pixels on the LCD screen, thus eliminating the need for CF.
BLUs together with the CF are LCD-TV key components and they are
responsible for more than 50% of the Bill of Material (BOM), most
of the power consumption and most of the display thickness and
weight.
OMS technology and architecture, protected by several patent
applications, includes a new method for producing thin optical
polymer sheets that will facilitate the production of next
generation BLU's based on Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) or diode
lasers (diode light).
The company's strategy is to develop, produce and market advanced
diode light based BLUs to the TV display manufacturers.
ADVANTAGES
Incorporation of the OMS technology into a diode light based BLU
will eliminate the lossy effect of the CF, reduce the LCD-TV
overall BOM and will create LCD-TV screens with enhanced
performance and lower cost.
OMS solution is to form waveguides embedded in large polymer
sheets that guide the light from a limited diode light sources
and mix them, at the sub-pixel output panel. This innovative
combination creates backlighting panels which avoid the lossy and
expensive use of CF while reducing also the number of diode
lights.
MARKET
Large (>30") thin TV screens are very attractive for home
entertainment and commercial use. About 10 million units were
sold during 2005 and about 60 million units are expected to be
sold by 2008, The expectation is that the TV market, which was
governed by the old CRT technology, will be ruled by the LCD
displays (more than 60% of the market by 2008), due to their
slimness, continuous improved quality and expected declining
cost.
Each LCD-TV requires a BLU which is tailored according to the TV
manufacturer's specifications. As a result the BLU market growth
is following the accelerated market growth of the overall LCD-TV
market.
The estimated BLU market, for LFPD LCD-TV (>30") is an
explosively growing market expected to reach $10B by 2010, almost
an X5 growth from the 2006 value of about $2B. This market will
continue to grow beyond 2010 due to the expected continuos growth
of the LCD-TV market fuelled by the consumer preferences for
larger and larger format TV sets.
