PROJECT SUMMARY
Foreign object debris (FOD) includes any object found in an
inappropriate location that can damage airplanes and related
equipment, and injure airport personnel and passengers. FODs
include a wide range of material such as loose hardware, pavement
fragments, catering supplies, building materials, rocks, sand,
pieces of luggage, and even wildlife.
FODetect, the XSight FOD Detection System, combines a proprietary
surface detection unit (SDU) with an image processing unit (IPU)
and a millimetric wave radar unit (MMWR). The system delivers
continuous automatic detection of FODs on runways and taxiways
without requiring new infrastructure. Integrating XSight's
patented solution, FODetect delivers real-time detection
capabilities. FODetect provides proven real-time detection
capabilities and offers an effective detection resolution under
conditions of normal and/or impaired visibility (such as
inclement weather or at night). FODetect scans an entire airport
runway and taxiway system in less than 30 seconds, delivering
critical time-to-action in less than 60 seconds. FODetect from
XSight Systems is the real-time solution for airport operations
teams to manage risks and prevent tragedies - without decreasing
airport capacity. Because FODetect provides real-time alerts and
image interface to control towers, airport authorities can see
what they need without delays.
THE MARKET:
FOD detection was both labor and time intensive until the
introduction of FODetect. Closing runways for unacceptably long
periods of time while checks for FODs were made is extremely
expensive.
According to research conducted by the U.S. Air Force Research
Laboratory at Wright Patterson AFB, FODs cause an estimated $4
billion in damage annually. This includes damage to aircraft,
personnel, and passengers - as well as lost revenue resulting
from delayed flights and closed runways.

Development/Regulation, BSc in electrical engineering from The
Technion and an MBA from Tel Aviv University, 10 years experience
in avionics systems and imaging/remote sensing systems.
PROJECT STATUS
FODetect has been granted a US patent. The product has been
tested successfully at a major Israeli airport.
