Project title: LIVER SUPPORT SYSTEM
Company name : *** EPIGENESIS LTD.
TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD
Biotechnology, Biomedical Devices
KEY WORDS
Acute Liver Failure, Liver
Support, Transplant, Kidney Failiure
PROJECT SUMMARY
EPIGENESIS is developing two extracorporeal bio-devices - aLIVE
and Renal+ - for the treatment and support of patients suffering
from acute liver and kidney failure. The products are based on
proprietary culture technology that allows complex human cells to
interact ex vivo with other cells present in the liver and
kidneys. EPIGENESIS' tissue cultures have been found to function
in vitro for periods of over six months, performing comparable
functions to normal liver cells in healthy individuals. The
cultures will be encapsulated into large bioreactor sheets which
can be stored in liquid nitrogen without loss of biological
function for several months. EPIGENESIS' bio-devices are
expected to increase life expectancy of kidney and liver
patients, improve the care and quality of life of patients and to
reduce care cost (fewer treatments in ICUs, shorter hospital
stays, etc.).
MARKET:
In the US alone, close to 750,000 patients a year are
treated in hospitals for liver failure and a further 100,000 for
kidney failiure. It is estimated that close to 20 percent of
these patients can benefit from Epigenesis' devices, that will
perform liver and kidney functions until the patient is
stabilized.

the technology, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Cell and
Developmental Biology at the Hebrew University.
PROJECT STATUS
The project has finished its incubator period and since 1999
operates independently.
* Pre-clinical trials
COOPERATION REQUIRED
The Company has raised US $1 million from private investors and
the Chief Scientist and is seeking further investment of US $4 -
US $5 million in order to initiate clinical trials, expected by
mid 2000. The Company is also seeking to enter into strategic
partnerships with leading pharmaceutical companies which will
jointly perform clinical trials, assist in the FDA approval
process and eventually participate in marketing of the product
and in the provision of service.
