PROJECT SUMMARY
Fecal incontinence is a widespread condition afflicting millions
and severely impacting healthcare costs, with only costly and
complex surgical solutions or cumbersome, limiting diapers (for
the elders) to provide "relief". SphinxTech is developing a
minimally invasive "insertable" device that will be positioned by
a physician in an out-patient clinic and will be applicable to
many or all patients. The company has already filed for a patent
protecting the underlying technology of this device, and is
already testing is in animal trials.

THE MARKET
Market Size: It is estimated that more than 20 million people
suffer from fecal incontinence, over 5 million of which are in
the USA. The yearly cost of fecal incontinence is estimated at
>$10Bil in the USA alone. Although the prevalence of fecal
incontinence increases with age, this condition afflicts many
young people as well.

Existing solutions fall into several groups:
* Solutions partially effective or effective only in the less
severe cases (dietary changes, Kegel exercises, bio-feedback,
medication, etc.)
* Surgical solutions requiring full anesthesia (sphinctreoplasty,
colostomy, sacral nerve stimulation etc.)
* Diapers

Surgical procedures are both expensive and riskier and are rarely
done. Medication and diet changes are used frequently but mostly
have little effect, if any, so diapers are by far the most common
"treatment". The use of diapers is a great burden (financial and
physical) on the daily routine of fecal incontinent people and
their immediate surroundings, and many times cause people to
decrease their amount of social interactions, reducing not only
the patient's quality of life but also his productivity. A
solution that is administered one time but is much simpler and
cheaper than a surgical procedure is needed.

is in early animal trials.
