PROJECT SUMMARY
ObesiTx Ltd., a medical device company, focuses on the research
and development of innovative, minimally invasive medical devices
for the treatment of obesity - the largest global chronic disease
in adults.
ObesiTx Ltd. is committed to develop and commercialize novel
anti-obesity products that provide a meaningful contribution to
this leading healthcare problem facing the United States, and the
world today. ObesiTx Ltd. was conceived in order to create a
safe, simple, effective, and minimally invasive alternative to
the surgical treatment of obesity - an innovative approach to
assist those people who need help beyond traditional diets, and
who wish to avoid extensive, irreversible surgery.
ObesiTx focuses on the development of systems, which are
implanted in the alimentary tract. These novel systems are
designed to reshape digestive organs and to change their volume,
in order to reduce food intake ability. The company's products
are designed for endoscopic introduction and implantation.
THE MARKET
Market Size: It is estimated that more than 250 million people
suffer from obesity worldwide. Obesity has reached epidemic
proportions in the US, affecting approximately 40 million US
adults. The Obesity Association estimates that 300,000
unnecessary deaths a year in the US can be attributed to obesity.
Obese persons are at an increased risk for diabetes, coronary
heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea, stroke, gall bladder disease,
several types of cancer, and certain musculoskeletal disorders.
Market Trends: The Treatment of Obesity is dominated by the
surgical approach which is a robust market that has grown in the
US by 280% since 1999 and is projected to increase manifold over
the next twenty years. In 2004, there were 140,000 bariatric
procedures performed in the US alone costing $3.5 billion
dollars. Estimates for 2005 anticipate a 29% increase to 180,000
procedures costing $4.5 billion. Along side with the increased
trend in obesity surgery, it is anticipated that less invasive
and possibly non surgical and less traumatic procedures will
emerge with the capability to significantly expand the patient
market target towards populations that wouldn't choose surgery as
the preferred solution to overweight condition.
