Project title: MUSHROOM SUBSTANCES WITH ANTI-CML ACTIVITY
Company name : MYCURE LTD.
TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD
Biotechnology, Health Care,
Pharmaceuticals
KEY WORDS
Small Molecule Drug,
Kinase Inhibitors, Medicinal Mushrooms, Cancer, Chronic Myeloid
Leukemia, CML
PROJECT SUMMARY
MyCure Ltd. is developing a therapeutic drug for the treatment of
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), based on the discovery of extract
with anti cancer activity from a previously un-described
mushroom, belonging to a medicinal mushroom family. The mushroom
extract is developed as botanical drug and as chemical drug
having anti-CML activity after MyCure scientists will identify
the active substance(s) in the extract. The extract and the drug
are intended to treat all stages of CML, including patients with
resistance to current available treatment, as well as other
Bcr-Abl related cancers. The mushroom extract was especially
effective against mutation T315I that seems to be refractory to
most Bcr-Abl inhibitors.
CML is a member of a group of diseases recognized by the presence
of fusion gene Bcr-Abl that gives rise to p210, an abnormal
tyrosine kinase protein. Expression of Bcr-Abl is the principal
driving force in CML development. Recently, imatinib mesylate
(STI571, Gleevec, Novartis) was introduced as a powerful
inhibitor of the tyrosine kinase activity of p210 Bcr-Abl and
thereby as an effective therapy for CML. Although Gleevec
produces high rates of complete clinical response in the chronic
phase, resistance is universal and clinical relapse develops
rapidly in the advanced phase of CML. This advanced stage is
characterized by growth of cancer cells having mutated Bcr-Abl
protein including the T315I mutation which accounts to about 20%
of the patient that do not respond any more to Gleevec.
CML afflicts over 300,000 people worldwide, with an annual
incidence of 5,000 new cases per year in the United States alone.
Gleevec is the only available therapeutic drug for the treatment
of CML and its annual sales currently exceed $2 billion. However,
about 50% of the patients do not respond to Gleevec or develop
resistance to the drug, and currently do not have an effective
therapeutic alternative.

PROJECT STATUS
The Company was established in February 2005.
MyCure finding is a mushroom-derived organic extract that is now
used to treat mice having induced CML disease.
MyCure's scientific goals for the coming months are to isolate
and elucidate the structure of the active moieties in the
mushroom extract by combining chemical purification methods,
biological assays and analytical chemistry. Once identifying
active molecule(s), we will determine their mechanism of action
and perform initial anti-CML efficacy in the CML animal models as
lead drug candidate.
MyCure has filed one US patent application "Mushroom extracts
having anticancer activity".
COOPERATION REQUIRED
The Company is seeking a partnership with an investor, or a
strategic investor who will provide the funds and expertise to
continue the drug development process.
