PROJECT SUMMARY
A patent-pending, modified hood was specially designed to deliver
inhaled medications to infants. The hood safely and comfortably
encloses the baby's head, without any contact, while delivering
the necessary dosage of medication close to the baby's nose. It
is equipped with a special adaptor to accommodate the output of a
nebulizer, including wet nebulizers, metered-dose inhalers and
dry powder inhalers. The product is aimed at the specific group
of children in need of inhaled medications up to the age of 2
years.
Further developments can adapt to delivery of new aerosol
medications, for example vaccines, and can also be adapted to the
geriatric population.
The hood overcomes most of the inherent problems of the facemask.
The baby lies comfortably in bed with the head enclosed within
the hood. Efficient medication delivery is ensured as the child
remains relaxed and the medication can be effectively absorbed.
Clinical studies recently conducted with a first prototype found
a better deposition pattern of the radiolabelled aerosol with the
new system as opposed to the conventional facemask.
