PROJECT SUMMARY
This invention relates to an improved method of decoding
convolutional codes. In particular, the invention relates to a
highly efficient method of decoding convolutional codes by
identifying error vectors.
At present, error-correcting codes are an integral part of all
digital communication systems. Error-control coding plays an
increasingly important role in today's communication systems.
Described concisely, error-control coding involves the addition
of redundancy to transmitted data so as to provide the means for
detecting and correcting errors that inevitably occur in any real
communication process.
Such coding techniques are particularly useful for transmission
over limited-power channels. Through adding redundancy to
transmitted data, the bit-error rate can be reduced considerably
without an increase in transmission power. Alternatively, keeping
the bit-error rate constant, a reduced transmission power is
required.
Today, convolutional codes dominate the error-correcting market.
They are the main alternative to block codes. Convolutional codes
have considerable error correcting capability. At the same time,
they have a lower decoder complexity than the block codes at a
given correction capability.

The project finished its incubator period of development. A
prototype of a 4 states decoder has been designed.
