Project title: INNOVATIVE DRUGS FOR THE PREVENTION AND THERAPY OF ALLERGIC DISEASES
Company name : ALLERGYFIGHT LTD.
TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD
Health Care
KEY WORDS
Allergy, Allergy
Prevention, Therapy
PROJECT SUMMARY
ALLERGYFIGHT is developing an innovative drug for the prevention
and therapy of allergic diseases.
The technology is based on the scientific work of Prof. Israel
Pecht from the Weizmann Institute and Prof. Anna Erdei of the
Budapest University, Hungary. They have discovered a small
peptide derived from the endogenous complement protein, C3a.
This peptide effectively inhibits the IgE- mediated degranulation
and the following secretion of inflammatory mediators by
mast-cells, thus, inhibiting the appearance of the toxic
mediators which cause the allergic symptoms. The investigators
have also discovered the mode of action of the potential drug,
showing that the peptide binds to the IgE receptor (Fce RI) and
inhibits the activation of the enzymatic cascade inducing the
toxic mediators secretion.
Results from trials in animals show a survival rate of 6/8 in the
treated group in comparison to 1/8 in the control group.
Moreover, the novel peptide has also been shown to prevent
infiltration of eosinophils and eliminates respiratory distress.
ALLERGYFIGHT provides effective and safe therapy for allergic
diseases by developing a disease modifying agent rather than
alleviating symptoms.
APPLICATIONS
AND TARGET MARKETS
Allergy affects 40-50 million people in the US only, 36 million
of whom suffer from seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever). The
number of young children with allergies and asthma is increasing
worldwide. Allergies cause seasonal miseries for millions and can
lead to serious, even life-threatening, conditions.
There is a market need for an effective and safe drug for the
prevention and treatment of allergic conditions using a novel
mechanism of action targeting the root cause of the disease.
The global market for asthma, and allergic rhinitis in 2004 was
about $21 billion, with five brands selling over $1.0 billion.
Allergic rhinitis is estimated to be about 50% of this market.
Datamonitor estimates that Xolair (anti IgE, Novartis) will reach
$593M by 2010, despite its reported safety problems, high cost
and administration by injection.
