Project title: ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY COATINGS FOR PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS
Company name : ADVANCED COATINGS INTERNATIONAL LTD.
INTERNATIONAL LTD.
TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD
Applied Chemistry
KEY WORDS
Photo-resist, Soldermask,
Water-borne, Solvent-Free
PROJECT SUMMARY
Manufacturing by-products from the electronics and computer
industry are raising increasingly important technical and
financial issues. There is a growing need to improve processes,
materials and manufacturing equipment to control the production
of hazardous wastes. Currently, manufacturing of printed circuit
boards (PCB) involves the use of various solvent-based
photo-resist coatings to define images for etching and plating as
well as to provide various dielectric protective layer.
The project focuses on the development and commercialization of a
unique waterborne technology, which permits 100% solvent-free
formulation of PCB photo-resists and soldermask. The innovative
chemicals are applied as liquids using conventional equipment.
The coatings are patterned with UV light, which results in
selective polymerization of the coating. The unexposed material
is removed with a dilute potassium or sodium carbonate water
solution. The patterned photo-resist is then used as a negative
acting plating or an etching resist. The soldermask version is
treated with a subsequent elevated temperature post-cure.
These chemicals will exceed manufacturing requirements and
applicable industry standards. They have the added benefit of
being userl-friendly as well as cleanable by simple soap and
water. The raw material and projected manufacturing costs of
these "NO-VOC" products will be competitive with existing
chemistries.
