Project title: SMART INFUSION VALVE
Company name : PRO-IV MEDICAL LTD.
TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD
Health Care; Medical Devices
KEY WORDS
Intravenous Infusion,
Blood Transfusion, Medical Errors, Patient Safety
PROJECT SUMMARY
PRO-IV MEDICAL LTD. has developed a smart infusion valve to
prevent medical errors in administering blood and IV medications
as well as its PRIDE technology (PRevent Intravenous Drug Errors)
to prevent errors in infusing, transfusing, and administering IV
medications.
The PRIDE system has three components:
1. Disposable plastic infusion/transfusion device ("the smart
valve")
2. Reusable, handheld activation devic-
** Scans medication bag and patient's ID bracelet
** Verifies dose, prescription, and timing of medication
** Opens valve
** Stores patient and medication information
** Communicates with other information systems in the hospital
** Records the activities performed by staff or caregiver
3. Information software that supports the handheld device
MARKET
A vast majority of hospital patients receive IV fluids.
Potentially harmful errors occur in about 33% of the cases. A
substantial number of the errors (35%) are related to the
preparation or administration of IV medications or blood
transfusions. In the United States alone, between 44,000 and
98,000 people die annually as a result of medical errors, more
than from motor accidents or AIDS. These errors cost a staggering
US $17 billion to US $29 billion per year.
There has been growing awareness of the problem of medical errors
in both government and private sectors.
It has estimated that there are 1 billion intravenous infusions
administered annually in the United States. In addition, there
are between 12 and 15 million units of blood transfused in the
United States and about 75 million worldwide. In the United
States, one unit of blood costs approximately US $150.
Pro-IV Medical will approach two major market segments for its
technology: the "general" infusion market and the blood
transfusion market.
