PROJECT SUMMARY
Minerva Cardionet's solutions serve as a universal organ
preservation solution. During the time between harvesting and
transplanting organs, and in cardiac bypass surgery, the organ is
deprived of blood and oxygen. This situation can lead to
ischemia, which results in rapid cellular damage, including the
release of heavy-metal ions; membrane damage, and accelerated
reduction in organ viability. Paradoxically, at the end of the
surgical procedure, when the new organ or vessels are
reconnected, more damage is possible due to a burst of free
radicals that are generated when heavy-metal ions meet a highly
oxygenated blood supply.

Minerva Cardionet's platform technology offers an effective way
to prevent such ischemia-reperfusion injurious (IRI) episodes.
The core compound of the company's technology uses non-toxic
concentrations of a molecule, YAC-101, a heavy metal chelator.
YAC-101 works to change the redox active metals into an inactive
form before free radical production begins. This concept stresses
the prevention of oxygen metabolite production rather than their
chelation, which is a more effective means for reducing
post-ischemic cardiac damage.
