PROJECT SUMMARY
Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) affects hundreds of thousands
of people and leads to tens of thousands of amputations annually
in the United States alone. In PVD, blood vessels become narrowed
or clogged and blood flow can be severely restricted. When this
happens, the patient may suffer from intermittent painful
cramping in the leg or thigh, rest pain, ulceration and, in
extreme cases, tissue gangrene, which often requires amputation
of the affected limb. PVD is a major cause of life and limb loss,
particularly among the elderly.
The annual amputation rate in western societies is estimated at
about 300 cases per million of population, causing severe
suffering and physical disability for patients, as well as
imposing heavy financial burdens. Several treatment options are
currently available, including medical treatment, angioplasty,
arthrectomy and peripheral bypasses of occluded arterial
segments. The success rates of these methods are moderate and the
surgical procedures can be complex and potentially dangerous.
Furthermore, many patients are not fit for such operations.

PerAssist's PeriBooster device is composed of an innovative
mechanical design, the device will increase the blood flow to the
ischemic limb, accelerating tissue reconstruction and avoiding
amputation.

The company has completed initial animal trials with very
positive results.
