PROJECT SUMMARY
LRS Ortho has developed a new aiming device for orthopedic
surgeries. The device helps to find a specific position of "blind
holes" for placing the distal "fixation" screws to hold the IM
Nails firmly inside the bones.
In contemporary Orthopedics, the Long bones fractures of the
upper and lower extremities are stabilized with metal rods (or
so-called Intramedullary Nails -IM Nail) which are implanted into
the hollow center (Intramedullary canal) of bones. However, the
implanted nail alone may provide only limited stability to a
fractured bone because the two parts of the bone may move (rotate
and/or telescope) on the Intramedullary Nail.
Modern IM Nails usually have a pair of spaced parallel holes that
are positioned diametrically across the IM Nail near the distal
end of it and another pair of spaced holes near the proximal end.
These holes are formed to accept the fixing bone screws, but when
the nail is installed, these holes are obscured by bone and soft
tissue and are invisible.
The problem has always been to get correct alignment for drilling
and placing bone screws through the bone into holes of IM Nail.
For proximal holes the problem is solved relatively simple with a
mechanical drill guide connected firmly to the proximal end of
the nail and with the help of a key-slot fixer, it positions the
drill guide precisely in place and prevents its rotational
displacement. For the distal end holes, however, this technique
can't be employed because the long nail is not sufficiently rigid
and its distal end after nail insertion may deviate from the
original, un-strained position.
The L-RaySpot system solves the distal end aiming problem using a
novel, laser-based opto-mechanical aiming device, computerized
image processing and special routine of using the said device
that provides simpler, more accurate and safer way of placing
screws into blind holes of IM Nail.
