Project title: MAGNETICALLY ACTIVATED TELESCOPIC INTRAMEDULLARY NAIL

Company name : ORTHOGON TECHNOLOGIES 2003 LTD.

LTD.

TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD

bone fractures, Limb elongation

KEY WORDS

Stimulation

PROJECT SUMMARY
Magnetically actuated IntraMedullary Nails (IMN) for treating
long bone fractures, non-unions and limb lengthening. The nail is
manipulated externally by magnetic induction force (a proprietary
technology of the company).

ADVANTAGES
The invention is a major advancement over existing intramedullary
nails (IMN) and is expected to become the next generation of
IMNs. There is no such technology on the market. The technology
is patent protected (pending) all over the world.
The device enables continuous exposure of the fracture to bone
growth-stimulating forces. Thus, fracture healing is accelerated
by one third to one half of the time required today. This is
achieved without elongating the operation time or any change of
surgical technique.
The magnetic technology is well established and is headed in our
group by some of Israel's leading scientists in the field.
Limb lengthening is done in this manner using an all-internal
device avoiding the numerous complications due to the use of
external fixators.

MARKETS
The target market in the western world includes about 800,000
patients a year of long bone fractures treated by IMNs. The
implant market for these fractures amounts to about US $400M.
The non-union market totals approximately 150,000 cases per year,
worldwide, amounting to US $300M.
About 60,000 patients undergo limb lengthening per year. Average
treatment cost is US $100K per patient. The total hardware market
is estimated to reach approximately US $850M.
Related markets are due to cost of recovery and rehabilitation.
These amounts are much larger, and the advantage of this system
lies in the possibility of shortening recovery by about one
third. Thus, insurers are expected to endorse the new technology
that promises accelerated healing.
There are additional potential markets such as mandible
lengthening and radius and ulna fractures.
