Project title: TRANSDERMAL DELIVERY SYSTEMS FOR THE TREATMENT OF NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES
Company name : NEURODERM LTD.
TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD
Therapeutics, Medical devices,
Life-Sciences
KEY WORDS
Neurodegenerative,
L-DOPA, Transdermal, Parkinson
PROJECT SUMMARY
NeuroDerm is developing transdermal delivery systems for the
treatment of neurological diseases and related disorders. These
systems are based on unique proprietary formulations and on a
device for maintaining low but constant concentrations of the
active drugs in blood, resulting in more efficacious
pharmacological effects while reducing adverse ones. NeuroDerm
strategy is to use compounds that are approved for human use,
thereby shortening the process of the product approval by the
health authorities. The development efforts are focused on
enhanced transdermal penetration formulations and on a device
delivering a variety of drugs for prolonged periods.
The first product to be developed is a transdermal delivery
system of L-DOPA for the treatment of Parkinson patients.
Transdermal delivery systems for the treatment of Alzheimer
disease and of xerostomia are planned next.
ADVANTAGES
Maintenance of small, but steady, blood concentrations, compared
with intermittent oral administration.
Conferring neuroprotection and prolonging the period of
beneficial effects of the drug by improving its pharmacokinetic
and pharmacodynamic profiles.
Expanding the conventional market of known drugs to new medical
indications.
MARKETS
The primary target market is the population of PD patients who
suffer from late motor fluctuations. This group of patients
constitutes about one third of the total PD patients (1,000,000
in the US and 4,000,000 in the industrial countries). The world
market size of drugs for the treatment of Parkinson disease
exceeds US $3 billion per year.
Currently there is no satisfactory solution for these patients,
and therefore, market penetration is expected to be high within
this group. The product may also be advantageous for the elderly
who have problems with frequent oral administration, as well as
for additional groups of Parkinson patients, with a growth rate
of 10%-20% per year.
