Project title: PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE

Company name : ENGINES PdM LTD.

TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD
Mechanical Engineering

KEY WORDS
Engine,
Automobile, Predictive Maintenance, Disel Engines

PROJECT SUMMARY
Development and manufacture of an effective predictive
maintenance (PdM) system for diesel engines, based on vibration
analysis.
The system will enable to monitor the engine's condition on-line
and to provide alerts and alarm notifications concerning its
state of health and possible upcoming malfunctions.

ADVANTAGES
* With a sufficient data base the vibration diagnostic procedure
will provide early information about:
1. Progressing malfunctions.
2. The sources of these malfunctions.
3. Estimates for the time period before the problem gets serious.
* Monitoring and analysis are performed "on-line" while the
engine is running, and with no need to disassemble and reassemble
engine parts.

TARGET MARKET
Reciprocating engines, especially diesel engines, have many
applications in which there is a critical need for continuous
operation with no failures or engine shutdowns.
These APPLICATIONS include:
* Diesel engines for use in emergency generators.
* Engines for military vehicles.
* Marine engines.
* Diesel engines in crucial industrial systems.
* Diesel locomotives.
* Reciprocating airborne engines.

PROJECT STATUS
The company has been established in 2000 and it is in the first
year of the incubator period.
The method was successfully employed for reciprocating spark
ignited four stroke and two stroke engines. Parameters such as
the persistency of the measurements, the location and direction
of the vibrations transducer, and the required frequency band
were examined and determined during the experiments. Spectra
analysis of several common faults, such as, disconnected spark
plugs, early spark timing, late spark timing, worn spark plugs,
fouled spark plugs and loose support, have been carried out.
Reflections of these faults have been revealed in the vibration
signature. General evaluation criteria for the engine health have
been proposed. The method is currently being applied to a series
of diesel engines. A code program, which will give a Go-NoGo
alarm is being tested.

COOPERATION REQUIRED
Financial / strategic partner for R&D completion and marketing.
