PROJECT SUMMARY
The project aims to develop, implement and market an innovative
biofeedback system for training and improving the functionality
of the human hand. The proposed method is based on the results of
research carried out on brain plasticity. Plasticity or
neuroplasticity is the lifelong ability of the brain to recognize
neural pathways based on new experiences.
The proposed system can lead to improving the life quality of
many people who suffer from hand dysfunction caused by different
kinds of neurological diseases or musculoskeletal disorders.
The proposed system consists of a novel biofeedback appliance and
a software package.
The appliance is composed of a unique ergonomic glove, which
senses various parameters of the patient's finger movements, and
hardware boards used for interfacing with a personal computer
(PC). The software provides rehabilitation exercises programs,
and user-friendly operation program for patients with no previous
experience with PC's.
Initially, the project will focus on developing a PC-oriented
appliance and a detailed marketing plan for it. Later the company
will develop also a microprocessor-based appliance suitable for
patients that do not own a PC.
