PROJECT SUMMARY
Most fish in captivity do not experience the conditions of their
natural spawning grounds, and consequently fail to reproduce
spontaneously. The aim of the project is to develop therapeutic
agents to overcome broad range of fish reproductive dysfunctions,
including failure to initiate the reproductive cycle. These
therapeutic agents can also be used to accelerate the onset of
puberty, a process by which an immature fish acquires for the
first time the capacity to reproduce. Induction of precocious
maturation and obtainment of fertilized eggs at a desired time in
commercially important fish, would: (i) greatly improve the
cost-efficiency of finfish farming operations, (ii) help
introducing new species that are not at hand for aquaculture
uses, and (iii) markedly reduce pressure on fish wild stocks.
