PROJECT SUMMARY
The target is to develop a platform for measurement of biogenic
amines. The platform can be used for diagnosing pathological
conditions, such as vaginal infections and cancer biomarkers, as
well to determine the spoilage, or freshness, of food products.
The detection technology is based on the measurement process
known as Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS).
The equipment is highly sensitive to volatile and semi-volatile
molecules, particularly amine compounds, discharged from the
sample, even at very low rates, as compared to other
technologies.
APPLICATIONS
AND TARGET MARKETS:
* Diagnosing vaginal infections - the three common types of
vaginitis: bacterial vaginosis (BV), candidiasis (yeast
infection) and trichomoniasis, are often misdiagnosed, even by
expert gynecologists. Over 800 samples of vaginal discharge
fluid have been tested with Q-Scent's device, Vaginal Infections
Diagnostic System (VIDS), with high accuracy (<95%).
* Cancer biomarkers - preliminary tests have shown that the
method can be used to determine biogenic amines in urine that are
indicators of pathological conditions.
* Food freshness - Q-Scent's studies have shown that rapid
testing of muscle food beef, poultry, pork and fish) can be done
to identify the degree of spoilage of the tested food and to warn
of any suspect items.
ADVANTAGES:
This method permits the detection of very low concentrations of
molecules (ppm to ppb range). It is particularly suitable for
compounds that have proton affinity (PA), prominent among which
are amines discharged when meat and fish spoil. The combination
of high specificity with the low cost of the portable device
should offer clear advantages over existing systems.
