PROJECT SUMMARY
Titanium sapphire rods serve as lasing medium in tunable solid
state lasers. The rod features make it an excellent material for
this purpose: It is a very good heat conductor. It absorbs light
in the range of 400 - 600nm and fluoresces in a broad band
spectrum (660 - 1100nm), making it possible to produce lasers in
its entire fluorescence range. Making use of the second (third
and fourth) harmonics widens the tunability range of the laser
from the UV to the near IR.

ADVANTAGES
The total and Ti:Sapphire laser markets grow at a rate of 20 %
per year.
The Ti:Sapphire rod market grows even faster and reached $ 30M in
1999. The added value for high quality Ti:Sapphire rods is very
high. Their price is one order of magnitude higher then the price
for the most widely used Nd:YAG rods of similar volumes. AC
CRYSTALS has the technology to produce rods whose quality is
second to none.

THE MARKET:
The total laser market reached $ 3.5 billion in year 1999. During
the last 7 years it enjoys a mean annual growth rate of about 20
%. The Ti:Sapphire laser market is part of this growth and in
some applications its growth rate is much higher. The main
Ti:Sapphire laser markets are concentrated in the US and Western
Europe. The far East markets are to be developed (Japan has just
entered the Ti:Sapphire laser field).The Ti:Sapphire market size
reached $ 150 M. in 1999.

PROJECT STATUS
AC CRYSTALS Ltd. was founded in November 1998. It has finished
its Incubator period and proceeding in independent development
program at the ROTEM Industrial Park.
